《许茂和他的女儿们》描写四川偏僻山村葫芦坝农民许茂一家的命运遭遇，回顾了合作化以来农村生活的曲折，反映了"文革"后期群众与"四人帮"的较量。1975年"四届人大"召开，邓小平同志主持工作，各条战线传来了整顿的喜讯。原县委宣传部长颜少春来到葫芦坝住在许茂家。许茂是土改积极分子、合作化时的作业组长，但长期"左"的政策使他变得孤僻自私，在集市上他竟压价买下别人用来付药钱的食油，再高价售给他人。连大女儿病逝，他也因大女婿金东水刚挨了整怕受牵连就不闻不问。（Xu Mao and His Daughters describes the fate of the peasant family in Sichuan in a remote village, reviews the twists and turns of rural life since the cooperation and reflects the contest between the masses and the gang of four in the later period of the "Cultural Revolution".
