Space is a specialized architectural monthly which was first published in 1966 and has been at the vanguard of covering the arts and culture scene here in Korea ever since. The magazine features not only architecture, but also diverse cultural and artistic activities across the spectrum of the fine arts. Space offers its readers a wide variety of architectural news throughout Korea, in Asia, and the world in general. LG Twin Towers • The LG Twin Towers (1987), familiar as Twin Buildings, is a pioneering structure that combined the ideal city concept of Yeouido with Western design principles of office architecture. Until the early 2000s, it was representative of the riverside skyline on the Hangang River, alongside the National Assembly Building and the 63 Building. However, despite that symbolic significance, the tangible and intangible values embodied by this architecture were largely overlooked for a long time. In 2024, a remodeling project centred on the atrium, the public areas between the two towers, brought these impressions of the building to the fore. The project brought together the original designer, SOM (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill), who designed the building 40 years ago, and Junglim Architecture, who joined as the local partner, for the remodeling. Discussions based on faded documents and records expanded into narratives that traverse personal, social, urban and architectural contexts. These encompass the original dream for the site, the changing environment of Yeouido, the production methods behind Korean architecture, and the evolving role of corporate headquarters. Jung Yoonchun (professor, Hongik University) re-examines the legacy of past ideals from today’s perspective, questioning how architecture can be renewed and renew itself in a changing era. The dialogue has resumed, and now is the time to continue. 쌍둥이 빌딩이란 이름으로 친숙한 LG트윈타워(1987)는 여의도의 이상 도시 구상과 서구의 오피스 건축 문법이 만나 실현된 선도적 건축물이 다. 2000년대 초반까지 국회의사당, 63빌딩과 나란히 한강변 스카이라 인을 대표하는 위상을 가졌으나 그 상징성이 무색하게도 이 건축이 함축 한 유무형의 가치들은 오랫동안 제대로 조명되지 않았다. 2024년, 두 타 워 사이의 공용 공간인 아트리움을 중심으로 진행된 리모델링 프로젝트 는 40여 년 전의 원설계자 SOM(스키드모어, 오윙스 & 메릴) 그리고 정 림건축종합건축사사무소가 설계에 참여하면서 가라앉아 있던 건물의 서 사를 수면 위로 끌어올린다. 바랜 자료에서 출발한 논의는 본래 대지가 품었던 꿈, 변화하는 여의도 환경, 한국 건축의 생산방식, 진화하는 기업 사옥의 역할까지 개인, 사회, 도시, 건축적 맥락을 종횡하는 이야기로 확 장된다. 정윤천(홍익대학교 교수)은 과거의 이상이 남긴 유산을 오늘의 관점으로 다시 들여다보고, 건축이 어떻게 시대의 변화 속에서 스스로를 갱신해가는지 질문한다. 대화의 물꼬는 트였고 이제는 이어갈 차례다.

장애물 없애기, 그 너머를 그리다: 데이비드 기슨, 리처드 도허티 What Lies Beyond Barriers: David Gissen, Richard Dougherty • 배리어 프리, 유니버설 디자인. ‘장애와 건축’ 하면 떠오르는 정책들이다. 이마저도 민간 부분에서는 잘 적용되지 않고, 장애인들의 삶에서는 체감하기 어려워 제도의 개선과 강화가 필요한 형편이다. 하지만 제도 정비만으로 충분할까? 휠체어 사용자인 건축학자 데이비드 기슨과 농인 건축가 리처드 도허티는 아니라고 답한다. 설계 과정에서 사후적으로 적용되는 제도를 통해 장애인을 ‘위한’ 건축을 만드는 것이 아닌, 설계 초기 그 이전의 담론에서부터 장애인의 관점을 담아야 한다고 말한다. 물리적 접근성 개선 이외에 어떤 것을 할 수 있을까? 장애인의 관점이 담긴 건축은 어떤 모습일까? 이들이 국립현대미술관 서울에서 개최된 〈기울인 몸들: 서로의 취약함이 만날 때〉에서 선보인 제안과 그 안에 담긴 이야기를 통해 알아보자. Barrier-free,...
