News Real • Our full-size railways are constantly evolving, providing fresh inspiration for modelling projects. BEN JONES looks at a few of the latest developments that could soon be appearing on our layouts.

Staff Show & Tell LOW LEVEL TRACTION • Needing a diminutive locomotive to operate his low-level colliery line, George Dent may have found an almost ready-made solution.

While the bull's away • A walk in the Peak District offered GEORGE DENT an idea for a layout cameo scene.

DAVE'S Mk 3 PROGRESS • DAVE LOWERY's mission to create several full HST sets in ‘O’ gauge continues, with the Mk 3 coaches gaining the essential livery embellishments.

JOY OF RECYCLING • PETER MARRIOTT cheered himself up by recycling a baseboard and working on his West Highland layout.

Inside track with Ben Ando • Ben Ando is the founder of Revolution Trains and a regular contributor to Model Rail.

The art of compromise • Seasoned modeller Paul Roberts expertly composed this early-2000s layout to fit within a newly converted loft space, with the onus firmly placed on play value, which is helping to inspire younger visitors.

The Forgotten Five • BEN JONES pieces together the little-known story of five Brush Type 4s built with French Sulzer V12 engines in the mid-1960s.

HOW TO BRUSH UP YOUR ‘48’ • A footplate crew adds the finishing touch to any model locomotive, so George Dent seats a suitable duo into the cab of his Class 48.

HOW TO GET THE BEST OUT OF RATIO'S TIMBER MERCHANT KIT • Chris Nevard tackles a plastic kit that has been around for years, but remains a favourite with modellers.

BUILDING FOWEY • Having created the harbour wall and landscape, Peter Marriott turns his attention to the waters of the River Fowey, as his Cornish china clay-themed layout takes shape.

HOW TO GIVE OLD LIMA MODELS A NEW LEASE OF LIFE • Drop-in replacement drive units for temperamental Lima motors have been offered before, but George Dent puts a new product to the test, featuring a high-quality coreless motor.

The Wolds Wanderer • Regularly driving past the site of Settrington station gave Kevin Smith enough of a modelling itch to recreate it in miniature.
