Go! Drive & Camp

Fancy a 900 km dirt-road trip? • When it’s time to say farewell to Namibia, the long stretch of the B1 tar road is usually your destiny. But if you’re not in a rush, take a detour at Rehoboth and travel this 900 km alternative over four days – it’s almost entirely dirt road! – until you reach the Velloorsdrif border post south of Karasburg.

Where we stayed

Along the edge of the desert • This route of nearly 400 km takes you on an unorthodox series of Namibian back roads from Solitaire to the Erongo Mountain. Always aiming northwards, you keep the sunset – and the Namib Desert – to your left. On the way you’ll see plenty of gemsbok but also some of the region’s quirkier inhabitants, like Namaqua chameleons.

Where we stayed

Roll with it! • The recipe: gather a group of adventurous motorcycle riders, buy a bunch of off-road motorcycles and set off on an unforgettable journey through exotic places. After the trip, the motorcycles are then handed over to nature conservation. This, in a nutshell, is Rally for Rangers, which landed in Africa for the first time in July 2023.

I ALSO WANT TO GO!

Have you ever seen the rain? • So, you’ve been to southern Namibia, but have you ever visited when it rains? That’s when the world turns into a lush grassland with an abundance of animals and muddy dirt roads. Pack an umbrella and enjoy the show!

Campsites with a view

Meandering through Botswana • Take two parts unspoilt Botswana, one part Namibia and a dash of Zimbabwe and you’ve got yourself a proper African adventure. We put this recipe to the test.

I want to go too!

From Onseepkans to Verneukpan . . . and beyond! • This three-day route sends you on a dusty stretch across the Bushmanland plains to the remarkable Verneukpan, finally spitting you out 670 km later near Three Sisters in the Karoo. When you arrive, your fingers are still a tad sticky from the koeksisters you bought in Pofadder – but you’re a new person!

Where we stayed

Driving along Daisy Lane • Namaqualand’s flower season occurs from July to October – peaking in late August to early September – so you’d better hurry if you want to book a camping spot for this year’s spectacle. Join us on a leisurely drive from Kakamas to Nieuwoudtville in search of the perfect floral show.

BOOK SMARTS

Get yourself to Goegap! • The Goegap Nature Reserve outside Springbok is one of the best flower destinations during spring. But there is also an excellent 4×4 trail where you can play with your off-road vehicle all year round.
