SOUNDS OF THE SIXTIES • Modern lorries have to conform to strict noise limits but, if you could turn the clock back 50 or 60 years, you could witness the fabulous sounds of good old-fashioned diesels echoing through the streets, none more memorable than the penetrating howl of a Foden FD6 two-stroke as fitted to this classic FE6/15 acid tanker of the Murgatroyd Salt & Chemical Co. Here it is captured on camera driving through Luton town centre in February 1965. Behind it is an equally classic Luton Corporation Transport Leyland PD2 in red livery from before the LCT fleet was absorbed into United Counties in 1970.
